This is the first of many issues to come showcasing Canadian speculative fiction poets.
Received 109 short stories and 126 poems. Will take several weeks to process and make selections.
However, Rhea Rose has already chosen the poems to appear in the first issue of Starlight which will come out later this month. Rhea intends to choose enough poems to fill out three subsequent issues.
In April issue #18 of Polar Borealis will be published, utilizing the last of the accepted submissions which came in February of last year. Issue #19, possibly to come out in June or July, will be the first of four issues to make use of the recent bout of submissions.
Probably the next submission period will be February of 2022. Or earlier, if need be.
The scope of both magazines means I’ve committed to publishing 96 genre poems a year. Canadian SF&F genre poets take note!

I had intended to publish #17 in December of 2020 but for a number of reasons I have fallen behind. I now intend to publish it in late February.
This probably means that #18 won’t appear till April.

The Auroras are Canada’s annual national SF&F awards (roughly equivalent to the American Hugos).
On August 15th, 2020, Polar Borealis won the Aurora Award in the “Best Fan Writing and Publication” category.
A word of explanation. There is no “semi-professional” level recognized in the Auroras. Therefore a magazine like Polar Borealis, which is free to download, is automatically considered a “Fan publication.” However, since my contributors are paid for their stories and poems, their publication in Polar Borealis is recognized as a professional sale, which makes them eligible for the professional Aurora Awards “Best Short Story” and/or “Best Poem.” For example, Ottawa writer Matt Moore won an Aurora in 2018 for his poem “Heaven is the Hell of No Choices” which I published in Polar Borealis issue #4.
Winning an Aurora Award is a great honour. I am one very happy Publisher.
